FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything couples ask about HalfHeart, in one place.
Getting Started
What is HalfHeart?
HalfHeart is a couples app that gives you and your partner one shared heart, and each of you holds one half. Pull your half away when you need space, change its colour to show how you feel, and send roses to bring each other back. It’s a gentle way to say what’s hard to put into words.
Is HalfHeart free?
Yes. HalfHeart is free, with no ads, no subscription and no in-app purchases.
Is HalfHeart available on Android and iPhone?
HalfHeart launches on Android first, and the Android beta is open now. The iPhone version is coming soon.
How do I join the Android beta?
On your Android phone: first join the LazyByte testers Google Group (groups.google.com/g/lazybyte-testers), then opt in at play.google.com/apps/testing/com.lazybyte.halfheart, then install HalfHeart from Google Play. If you opt in before joining the group, Google Play says you’re not eligible, so do the steps in order. Your partner joins the same way.
Do both partners need the app?
Yes. Both of you need HalfHeart and your own account. You can sign up with Google or with an email and password.
How do we pair our phones?
One of you taps “Generate Code” and shares the 6-character code. The other enters it under “I have a code” and taps “Connect”. A code works once and for 24 hours.
Can I pair with more than one person?
No. HalfHeart is for exactly two people. You pair with one partner, and there are no groups, public profiles or feeds.
Who can use HalfHeart?
HalfHeart is for adults aged 18 and over. It’s made for couples, especially long-distance couples, busy couples who miss each other during the day, and anyone who finds it easier to show a feeling than say it.
The Heart
What happens when I pull my half away?
How far you pull says how much space you need. A small tug springs back. “Need a little space” has no lock. Further levels lock your half: Hurt for 6 hours, Angry for 12 hours, Really angry for 24 hours, and holding Really angry for 2 seconds freezes it into a 3-day long break. Nothing is sent until you let go.
Can I take my half back early?
Only in the first 5 seconds. A new lock waits 5 seconds with an Undo button before your partner hears about it. After that the lock is fixed: not even you can come back early. Only time, or a rose from your partner, opens it.
What do the colours mean?
Swipe your half up to pick a colour: ruby red for loved, blue for missing you, purple for need some care, silver for a low day (which tells your partner it’s not about them), and gold for proud of you. Colour shows how you feel; distance shows what you need from your partner.
Does HalfHeart record what we argued about?
No. HalfHeart never records what a fight was about. When a half comes back from a lock, your timeline gets a moment like “Made up after 9 hours”, and that’s all.
What does my partner see when I pull away?
A gentle message, such as “Sam needs a little space”, “Sam is feeling hurt” or “Sam is upset”. HalfHeart never says “Sam is angry at you”.
Is there a chat in HalfHeart?
No, and that’s on purpose. You talk through the heart (distance and colour), roses, your shared timeline and notifications. HalfHeart isn’t a replacement for talking to each other.
Roses, Garden & Timeline
How do roses work?
Roses grow in your own 3D garden: a white rose every day, a yellow every week, a red every month and a pink every year. Pick them and send them to your partner. On a lock, white takes 2 hours off, yellow takes 12, and red or pink open it straight away.
What happens to roses my partner sends me?
A received rose stays fresh for 3 days. In that time you can keep it or give it back to your partner’s garden. After that it dries into your keepsakes. Kept roses can be arranged into bouquets on your flower shelf.
Can I buy roses?
No. There’s nothing to buy in HalfHeart. Roses grow in your garden on their own schedule.
Does the 3D garden work on every phone?
The garden has a list view too, and phones without 3D support get the list view automatically.
What can we put on the timeline?
Moments like the day you first met, became friends, your first date, the day you became a couple, anniversaries, birthdays, trips, special days and plans. Either of you can add, edit or delete any moment, and HalfHeart counts your days together and down to what’s coming next.
Privacy & Account
Is HalfHeart private?
Yes. You pair with one partner using a private code, and nobody else can see your heart. Your data is encrypted in transit and never sold.
What can my partner see?
Your display name, gender and birthday (if you add them), your half of the heart, roses you send, your shared timeline, and your flower shelf if you choose to share it. Your partner can’t see your email address, your garden or a private shelf.
Does HalfHeart access my location, contacts or photos?
No. HalfHeart doesn’t access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, tap the profile icon (top right) and choose Delete account. Your account and data are deleted straight away and permanently.
What happens to my partner if I delete my account?
A shared heart can’t continue with only one half, so the roses you exchanged and your shared timeline are deleted for both of you, along with your partner’s bouquets. Your partner keeps their own account, gets a notification, and can pair again.
Is HalfHeart a form of therapy or counselling?
No. HalfHeart is for fun and connection. It isn’t counselling, therapy, medical advice or an emergency service. If you or someone else is in danger, contact your local emergency services.
